December 11, 1945 – August 3, 2021

Roland Magee of Black Diamond, AB, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, at the age of 75.

Rolly was born on December 11, 1945, in small town Saskatchewan. He was the first of seven children born to Cecil and Simone Magee. He grew up in Val Marie where he cultivated lifelong friendships that he never walked away from.

In 1970, he married Elaine Paczkoski in Orkney, Saskatchewan and started his own family in Calgary, AB, where their daughters Monica and Wendy were born. He started working for Canadian Western Natural Gas as a labourer. In 1977, Rolly and Elaine transferred to Brooks, where their son Bobby was born. Rolly loved working for Canadian Western Natural Gas and earned his gas fitters ticket in 1983. Rolly and his family loved small town living, where they could become part of the community. He was on the volunteer fire department, loved curling, he played slow pitch and again, made many lifelong friends.

Rolly and Elaine transferred to Black Diamond in 1985 to be closer to his parents who lived here. He continued to work for Canadian Western Natural Gas where he was eventually promoted to the position of Agent. After 21 years, Rolly and Elaine parted ways. In 1995, Rolly was elected a Black Diamond Town Councillor. After serving one term as a councillor, Rolly was elected and served as Mayor for 10 years. He served on multiple committees and was a great ambassador for the town. Rolly was incredibly proud to have been elected for multiple terms. He loved his town and his area. His retirement from ATCOGas in 2005 allowed him to focus even more on being mayor. During this time, Rolly was married to Kelly, and they enjoyed travelling and riding their motorcycles together and spending time with their families.

Rolly loved to attend any local function, he also enjoyed travelling, which he tried to do every winter once he retired. He loved chasing the sun and dry pavement so that he could ride his Harley. Some of his best friends introduced him to Lizzie Hale in Creston, and he fell in love again.

Rolly loved being a part of this community and he loved his family. He is survived by his three children - Monica (Dennis), Wendy, Bobby (Olivia), grandchildren - Cam (Cheyanne), Brandon, Connor, Caleb, great grandchildren- Blaire and Weston, his siblings - Connie (Jack), Ron (Marilyn), Garry (Betty Jane), Carol (Larry), Eddie (Donna), Debbie (Wayne), and many nephews and nieces.

A Celebration of Rolly’s life will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2021, at the Black Diamond Gospel Church at 2:00pm.

The family would like to thank STARS Air Ambulance, the staff at Oilfields General and staff at the ICU of the South Health Campus for all the care and compassion he received. Donations may be made to STARS Air Ambulance in Rolly’s name.
