May 20th , 1933 – August 23rd , 2021

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Constance (Connie) May Hunt (née Herr) on August 23, 2021 at the age of 88.

Connie was born in High River on May 20, 1933 to Doris and Forest Herr and lived in the Okotoks area her whole life. Her grandparents were married in St. Peter’s Anglican (1912), and Connie was baptized, confirmed and married there also.

In 1939, King George VI toured Canada. After hearing “God Save The King” so much on the radio, Connie played the tune by ear on the piano. This started a lifelong love of music, as well as an ongoing devotion to the Royal Family. She had perfect pitch and became the organist at St. Peter’s Anglican church in her teens. She continued to play most Sundays for the next 6 decades, also playing countless weddings, funerals and seniors’ homes. Connie was playing right until the end and would play her own funeral if she could.

Connie grew up on her family farm northeast of Okotoks. She rode a horse to the Allen School (a one-room country schoolhouse) for a few years, and then took the bus to Okotoks. Later, she attended Olds College and Mount Royal, and worked as a secretary in a law firm before getting married to David in 1955.

With her husband David, she had a successful farm and ranch – the Ribstone Cattle Company, and later the Calgary butcher shop Ribstone Meats. She did a lot of canning and baking of bread over the years, raising a family of four, and feeding an army of hired hands.

Things she loved: St Peter’s church, her vegetable garden, cheering on the Flames, attending her son’s theatrical performances with friends, Pad Thai (and many other types of food from around the world), spending time with her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, having a cup of tea with anyone. She made a point of remembering all her caregivers’ names and little details about their lives. Connie never complained and always saw the best in others and the situation.

Predeceased by her husband of 49 years, David, her daughter Jennifer, her sister Bev, and her parents, Doris and Forest Herr.

Connie will be mourned by her brothers Gordon and Albert (Sharon), her sisters-in-law Ann and Judy, her Aunt Joan, her cousins Robert, Margeurite and Ron, and many other nieces, nephews and extended family. She will also be dearly missed by her children Danny (Mel), Peter, Christopher (Elizabeth), and Cecilia (Wayne), her seven grandchildren Weston, Jenna (Mitch), Brett, Justin (Joanna), Grady (Christine), Arden (Chayce) and Chelsea, and her five great grandchildren Alysson, Alexander, Julie, Atlee and Chase. She was a friend to so many, and truly loved.

A special thank you to all of the doctors, nurses and caregivers at Heartland, Tudor Manor and the High River hospital.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to St. Peter’s Anglican Church or the CNIB.

A celebration of Connie’s life will be held on August 31 at 1:30 at St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Okotoks. In consideration of rising COVID case counts, the funeral will require masks. However, the service can be live-streamed via: https://stpetesok.church/
