Okotoks protective services director Scott Roberts said people returning to their homes are asked to open their windows to bring in fresh air.

Scott Roberts, Okotoks emergency services director, said several residences in a townhouse complex on the corner had to be evacuated.

He said officials aren’t concerned about gas levels building up in homes, but ATCO Gas personnel are on scene to assist anyone who may smell gas in their home.

“If people arrive home and they smell gas in their home, they can open their doors and windows and there are ATCO people who can come and use gas detectors to check for concentration levels,” said Roberts.

About 25 homes were evacuated the afternoon of Aug. 11 after construction workers ruptured a gas line at the intersection of Cimarron Boulevard and Cimarron Trail Friday afternoon. Emergency personnel responded to the leak and several roads near the intersection were closed off.

“A four inch pipe was ruptured during construction, we’ve got RCMP looking after a perimeter and they“re supported by municipal enforcement and we have EMS on stand by just in place,” said Roberts.
