Sing like Stevie at upcoming Joyful Noise event

St. Andrew's United Church in Dewinton is giving you a chance to sing Fleetwood Mac — in public — at a fun fundraiser on March 25.

If you’ve ever wanted to let your inner Stevie Nicks or Lindsey Buckingham out, well, St. Andrew's United Church in Dewinton has an event for you.

The church is hosting Joyful Noise, a casual choiring fundraiser featuring the music of 1970s super group Fleetwood Mac on Saturday, March 25 at 7 p.m.

“We’re trying to build community by getting people out after all the challenges of COVID,” said church trustee and event co-ordinator Shirle Ternan. “And what better way to do that than with music.”

Joyful Noise will see participants sing a handful of songs to get warmed up before taking a break to enjoy social time complete with dessert and beverages. After the break, they’ll take part in what’s known as casual choiring, which essentially breaks songs into different vocal arrangements and puts them back together.

No musical or choir experience is required — just a love of singing.

“The idea is that you don’t have to be a singer, you don’t have to have a really good voice, you just have to like to laugh and have fun,” said Ternan.

It’s being billed as a fun night out, a perfect date night or a group night out.

Started in Toronto over a decade ago, the casual choiring craze has spread throughout the world to create events that offer equal parts singing, comedy and community building. It’s the first time St. Andrew's has hosted such a gathering.

Tickets are $20 (plus service fees) and can be purchased at eventbrite.ca. Tea, coffee and dessert are part of the package, with beer and wine also available.

Proceeds from the evening will support local causes.
