Foothills Writers Group founder Laurie Carmichael is encouraging members of the public to rub elbows with local writers and authors at the Local Author Bookfair at the Okotoks Public Library.

The Foothills Writers Group (FWG) will be putting local authors in the spotlight when it hosts its second annual Local Author Bookfair this weekend.

Set for the Okotoks Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the event will highlight the many talented writers in Okotoks and surrounding communities.

“We invite members of the community to join this family-oriented event and rub elbows with local writers and authors,” said group founder Laurie Carmichael. “By bringing this type of event to our community, the FWG hopes to promote literacy in the Foothills community.”

The Foothills Writers Group is sponsoring a writing contest for Okotoks Grade 5 and 6 students attending public, separate and francophone schools. Students are invited to submit a short story during the event.

Prizes sponsored by local business — Tim Hortons, Boston Pizza, Ridley Cycles, Yooneek Books, Okotoks Cinemas, Okotoks Oilers, Dairy Queen and Sobeys — will be awarded to students for their achievements.

Along with the many talented authors from the Foothills Writers Group, acclaimed Canadian author Lecia Cornwell will be in attendance. Cornwell is the writer of historical novels, including the recent release That Summer in Berlin.

Games and door prizes as well as book sales and author signings will be available at the fair.
