Well decommissioning is set to resume west of Turner Valley.
The Orphan Well Association (OWA) expects to finish work this winter to decommission the Katana Resources British Dominion #3 well, located on the western edge of Turner Valley near the Country Meadows subdivision.
An earlier story in the Western Wheel said the work was set to begin in August, 2021. According to information on the OWA website, it was halted a short time later.
Decommissioning work is now expected to take place between November 2022 and March 2023, but an exact start date has not been scheduled yet.
The OWA “believes this new timing will provide the best chance of a successful outcome with the least impacts to the land.”
The work was delayed for two reasons, said the OWA.
“The first is that the OWA wants to minimize disruption to the site. Delaying until the ground is frozen will result in the least impact to the field.”
The other was the service rig being used could not complete the needed work, and the OWA said operations were stopped at that point.
The association said the well currently poses no risk to the public or the environment.
