A small Foothills town is inviting families across the region to ring in the new year with dancing, skating and wagon rides next week.

The Town of Turner Valley is hosting its annual Family New Year's Eve Party in what’s become a Dec. 31 town tradition. The festivities take place at the Flare ‘n’ Derrick Community Hall, Millennium Park and the outdoor skating rink from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Hazel Martin, Turner Valley’s interim community events co-ordinator, said the event typically draws about 500 people, with another 200 enjoying the fireworks display at 8 p.m.

“We get a lot of folks out of Okotoks, the surrounding area and a few from south Calgary because this is one of the only evening family New Year’s Eve events in the area,” said Martin. “It’s a community builder.”

Back by popular demand is a dance party in the Flare ‘n’ Derrick Community Hall where prizes will be awarded throughout the evening for the most talented and enthusiastic dancers.

“We’re really encouraging folks to come out and dance the night away,” said Martin.

The free event will also offer face-painting and attendees can enjoy free hot dogs, hot chocolate and popcorn.

Those looking to head outdoors can hop aboard a horse-drawn wagon that will take them through the lights display in Millennium Park or lace up for a skate around the outdoor rink behind the community hall. Fire pits will be on site for people to warm up at and the Turner Valley Fire Department will set up a first aid station, Martin said.

The night will end with a fireworks display from the Turner Valley Campground at 8 p.m.

Parking at the Flare ‘n’ Derrick will be closed during the wagon rides, which end at 7:15 p.m. Parking will also be available in the Dr. Lander Memorial Swimming Pool parking lot throughout the evening.
