A lengthy RCMP investigation has resulted in charges to a Calgary man after multiple break and enters in Foothills and Rocky View counties targeted high-end items.

The RCMP’s Cochrane Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) and Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit (SAD CRU) investigated a series of break and enters that occurred in Rocky View County and Foothills County over a three-month period.

During the investigations, a suspect was identified and search warrants were executed at a residence and storage locker in Calgary.

As a result of the search warrants, multiple items were recovered and seized, including over $200,000 worth of stolen jewellery, stolen identification, stolen credit cards and passports, five firearms and ammunition, and three vehicles, including a stolen Ducati motorcycle.

The break-ins occurred over a three-month period starting in August, with the most recent taking place in Foothills County on Nov. 15.

Matthew Grouette, 35, has been charged with the following offences and remanded into custody:

  • Five counts of break and enter and theft
  • Possession of stolen property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Three counts of breach of probation
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm

Grouette will appear in Cochrane provincial court on Nov. 29.

In October, a Foothills County home was burglarized and a large quantity of jewellery and a safe with money inside were taken.

In November, Turner Valley RCMP responded to a residential alarm at a Foothills County residence and confirmed a break-in took place.

Also in November, Cochrane RCMP responded to a break and enter at a residence in Foothills County where suspects pried open the front door and jewellery was stolen. The same day, police received multiple reports of two suspicious males prowling residences in the same area of the previous break and enter.

Four similar break-ins occurred in Rocky View County between August and November and the suspects and suspects' vehicle were captured numerous times on video.

RCMP say the charges that resulted in these investigations show the value of good quality video surveillance.
