A public hearing on Brauerei Fahr's development plan is scheduled for the Turner Valley council meeting on July 20.

The hearing is to consider an application by the brewery to amend the Municipal Development Plan (MDP) and Land Use Bylaw (LUB) on a five-acre parcel of land on Decalta Road.

The amendments brought forward by the brewery are part of the conditional sales agreement for the site, Turner Valley CAO Shaw Patience said during council’s June 1 meeting.

When Town council unanimously approved the sale to Brauerei Fahr in October 2021, conditions included amending the MDP to show the land as commercial on a land use concept map and rezoning the land to Central Business from its current designation as Public Service.

The amendments passed first reading on June 1, and a public hearing must take place before second and third readings of the proposal.

The brewery has plans to build a 25,000-square-foot facility on the site to include the brewery, taproom and an event space.

Patience said these amendments would allow that development to proceed.

Coun. Cindy Holladay said she is happy to see the zoning proposed for business rather than industrial.

“That was, I think, a good choice in light of conversations that we’ve had,” Holladay said.

The Town said that since the first reading on June 1, other amendments to the MDP have been put forward by Fahr Brewery. One of the additional amendments is to remove the “River Valley” designation from the land in question on the MDP’s Sensitive Areas Map.

The Town is reviewing studies Brauerei Fahr has provided in support of that change and will respond to them during the public hearing for the MDP amendments.

The Notice of Public Hearing can be accessed on Turner Valley’s website or viewed in the July 6 edition of the Western Wheel newspaper.
