The majority of students will be back at C.I. McLaren Elementary School on Nov. 3, one day after the Black Diamond education facility was closed due to an individual at the facility reporting positive for COVID-19.

The Kindergarten to Grade 6 school was closed on Nov. 2, to give the facility a thorough cleaning and complete close contact tracing.

The case was reported to the school early Nov. 2. The individual was last at the school on Oct. 30.

While most of the students will be back at school, one class of students will have to self-isolate due to delays in contact tracing.

“A classroom of students has received notice to begin self-isolation where they will be supported to learn at home,” said superintendent of schools Chris Fuzessy on the school’s website. “For this group, learning will be accessible and flexible through a teacher provided online platform as students continue their education remotely during their isolation periods. The teacher will remain in contact and will be sharing learning plans with students at that time. Learning plans will consist of learning activities, resources, and information on assessment of student progress.”

There will also be adjustments to staffing for the time being.

“Students will be supported by both guest teachers and staff who are self-isolating and working from home,” Fuzessy's statement read.

Coming out of retirement to assist, is former C.I. McLaren principal Sherry Agasoster-Jones, who retired at the end of the 2018-19 school year.

Agasoster-Jones will remain in communication with principal Stacey Swanson who is also working from home.
