Apple peeling contests, an apple-themed scavenger hunt and candied apple making are among the activities planned for a popular fruit festival in the Foothills.

Granary Road is hosting its fourth annual Apple Fest Sept. 26 and 27 featuring games, demonstrations and activities – as well as a market with all things apple – northwest of DeWinton.

The festival runs both days from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“There’s just so many things we can do with apples,” said spokesperson Jane Walter. “All of our vendors can easily come up with apple dishes and culinary options for the public when they come.”

Walter said participants can take in apple cider pressing demonstrations, make candied apples and participate in an apple-themed scavenger hunt, apple peeling contest, apple slide races and build apple terrariums.

“Granary Road is focused around agriculture and education,” Walter said. “We have a giant orchard in the park where we teach kids about how to grow trees and fruit-bearing trees and things like that. We have some apple trees that produce fruit on the property.”

Another highlight of the event is the market’s approximately 40 vendors who will sell a range of apple products including caramel apples, apple perogies, apple cider, apple cookies, apple pies, pickled apples, apple jams, caramelized apple pizza, apple cheese, apple butter and apple poutine, said Walter.

“We have lots of exciting vendors and lots of fun for families,” she said. “It’s going to be a great weekend to come out and enjoy some fresh air in a safe environment and really support local.”

Some events will require pre-registration to ensure social distancing for the safety of participants.

The apple slide races and scavenger hunt require an admission of $10 per person age three and older to access the Active Learning Park. No pre-registration is needed for those events.

Walter said admission to the Active Learning Park was lowered from $15 when Granary Road reopened in June during Stage 2 of Alberta’s Relaunch Strategy.

“We lowered our Active Learning Park admission to $10 to help families who are suffering financially from COVID,” she said. “It’s really helped a lot of families go out and do something safe and fun.”
