The $3,900 cheque will go towards equipment to support youth participation in the club's junior league.

The Oilfields Curling Club (OCC) has received funding to support its junior curling initiative.

A $3,900 cheque from the Canada Post Community Foundation was presented to curling club representatives and youth members at the post office in Turner Valley on Oct. 13.

OCC president Tim Tomayer said the funding means there will be good, new equipment for youth to use.

“It will allow us to grow participation in our Junior Curling Program and give more youth in our community the opportunity to learn the sport of curling,” Tomayer said.

The youth program helps kids be active and can be an introduction to a sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime, he said.

To give youth a chance to try curling, the OCC is hosting an introductory open house at the curling rink in Black Diamond, located at 613 Third Street SW, on Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Open to youth aged six to 14, the open house is free and lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required. For more information, visit www.occcurling.com/juniorclinic.html

The Oilfields Curling Club strives to encourage people of all ages to participate in the sport of curling and serves the communities of Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Longview, Millarville and Foothills County.

The Canada Post Community Foundation supports charities, school programs and local initiatives that benefit children and helps them to be part of a caring and supportive community. It has granted more than $12 million to over 100 community organizations nationwide.
