Turner Valley and Foothills RCMP have some tips to stay safe and secure over the holidays.

After two years of gathering restrictions, Foothills RCMP are asking people to celebrate responsibly, and are offering tips for a safe and secure holiday season.

In the latest Foothills County policing update, RCMP say that planning for a designated driver is one way to get home safely, or people can stay where they are if they have been drinking and don’t have a ride.

They also ask people to drive with care on icy roads.

Police remind drivers to leave room between themselves and the vehicle in front so there is enough time and space to brake if needed.

RCMP suggest that people make their home look occupied if they are away. Consider using devices to automatically turn lights on and off, have a neighbour check on the home, or consider installing a security camera.

With the cold weather, it's important to never leave a vehicle running while unattended, even for a short time, and to lock the doors as the car warms up in the morning.

Over the holidays, the Turner Valley RCMP detachment will be closed on Dec. 26 and 27 and Jan. 2.

RCMP can always be contacted through the non-emergency complaint line at 403-933-4262 or by calling 911 in an emergency.
