The Oilfields Drillers compete in boys volleyball at the C. Ian McLaren gym on Nov. 19.

Two Oilfields High School teams called on local councils for support as they prepare to host provincial tournaments in the fall.

In 2022, the Black Diamond school will be hosting the Alberta Schools' Athletic Association (ASAA) Golf Championship at courses in Turner Valley and Highwood in High River from Sept. 26-27.

Meanwhile, the school's volleyball team will be playing host for the 2022 ASAA 2A Boys Volleyball Championship Nov. 23-26.

Both events are expected to bring hundreds of spectators, parents, coaches and players to the area.

Turner Valley agreed to fund each club with $500 for a total of $1,000 from its Community Support Grant Program.

CAO Shawn Patience said Oilfields always puts on a great event and council was happy to support the cause.

Black Diamond councillors, too, voted in favour of supporting the students to the tune of $500 per club, plus swag.

While the teams' requests don't fit Black Diamond's criteria for the economic development funding, they are traditionally considered and supported through council's donation process.

The budget, however, saw this donation category reduced to $350 in deliberations.

Council was told that since the 2022 budget has yet to be approved, this category could be adjusted to $1,000 to support the two sporting events.

Black Diamond will also provide the volleyball team with promotional items for 75 gift bags for the event.

The last time the school's athletic program requested funding from Black Diamond council was ahead of the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2019.
