Black Diamond and Turner Valley councils are set to discuss amalgamation tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 9) at a joint meeting and residents can tune in.

The topic has already come before both councils individually last week as councillors moved to accept a letter from the municipal affairs minister as information.

The letter, dated Jan. 10, calls for both councils to confirm their position on the potential merger as October's municipal election saw some new councillors join the table.

In a post to social media today, the Town of Black Diamond urged residents who are in support of or against amalgamation make their voices heard.

"A great way to do that is to send emails directly to the councillors as some of them are not on social media," the post reads. "If you do not let your opinion be heard, they won't know what you are thinking."

A website and Facebook page created by former Turner Valley councillor Jamie Wilkie called Support DV Amalgamation is urging residents to speak up, as well.

"There are four simple actions that you personally can take in order to make sure your support for amalgamation is heard loud and clear by your councillors when they make this decision," the web page reads.

Those in support are encouraged to contact members of council, complete a survey that will be provided to council, like the Facebook page to show support and share support in any other way that delivers the message, such as putting a sign in a window or sharing a meme.

Residents can tune into councils' virtual Joint Friendship Agreement Committee meeting at 6 p.m. through either of the towns' websites. Here Black Diamond - Document Center (civicweb.net) and here Turner Valley - Meeting Information (civicweb.net).
