Homeowners in Black Diamond who are struggling to pay their bills in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic are getting some relief.

The Town of Black Diamond announced March 26 that it’s deferring payments for town utilities - water, sewer, garbage and recycling - to September for those residents who are unable to pay their bills.

“We’re following along with what the province has suggested to give people relief,” said director of emergency manager Jamie Campbell. “If you’re not working and you have to pay utilities that’s one more thing that you don’t have money for. At the end of the day you still have to pay it, but it gives you a little bit of a cushion.”

The deferral process applies to the January/February, March/April and May/June billing periods, which will be due no later than Sept. 15, said Campbell. If the bills aren’t paid in full before Sept. 16, the outstanding amounts will incur a five per cent interest charge.

The Town will also waive penalties for outstanding January/February bills until Sept. 15, according to details on the town website.

Mayor Ruth Goodwin told residents in an online video on March 26 that account holders with preauthorized withdrawals can stop the transactions. For instructions on cancelling pre-authorized utility payments go to http://town.blackdiamond.ab.ca/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=401

“This is in hope to offer some financial relief to Black Diamond residents in the short term during this unparalleled time,” she said. “Residents who can pay are encouraged to do so. For those who cannot, this payment deferral option is available.”

Utility bills will continue to be sent out and the July/August bill will be due no later than Oct. 15 before fees are applied.
