Mark your calendar! Saturday, February 24 from 10 am to 2 pm is Innovation Day at Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School (STS). All are welcome!

What can families expect on February 24th? A fun-filled day that engages all the senses and sparks a sense of curiosity and wonder. It’s a family-friendly event with something for everyone to enjoy.

The day starts with keynote speaker Dwayne Matthews from Tomorrow Learning Labs, who will explore the interconnectedness of education, student readiness, and economic prosperity. This discussion aims to reveal how these elements collectively influence societal advancement. Educators, policymakers, and leaders will gain valuable insights from this keynote address.

The day continues with a panel discussion where industry leaders guide the conversation about how to empower the next generation. Hands on activities and demonstrations include CAD and 3D printing, Lego challenges, an interactive NextGen EduCare playground, a model car race, and a makerspace. Students can pitch their innovations in a Dragon’s Den style competition. A variety of workshops will help parents and educators learn new and exciting trends. There is something for everyone! There is no need to leave the grounds when it’s time to eat. STS’s Bistro will be open for food and refreshments.

Alanna Wellwood, Head of Learning Innovation and the Principal of STAND, says, “This is the ultimate day designed to celebrate innovation in and beyond our schools. We are serving as a tech ecosystem for the community at large. Innovation Day has events for everyone – educators, businesspeople, entrepreneurs, families, youth, and kids. We worked hard to make this event family- friendly. Parents can drop their children off at an activity and join a panel discussion.”

She goes on to note that it’s not just STS employees running the event and the talks. Presenters and activity hosts come from various parts of Alberta, further lending to the diversity and community appeal.

“The great thing about an expo like this,” Wellwood continues, is that you can go to the parts that interest you. That means you can join us for the whole day or come for a couple hours to hear a presenter or take part in a specific activity. You can build your own schedule accordingly.”
