There is something absolutely magical about experiencing the natural power of waterfalls. Here in Alberta, we are lucky to be able to camp close to a number of falls. Check out these three great campgrounds that are close to spectacular waterfalls.
Ram Falls Provincial Park
Located 65 km south of Nordegg on forestry trunk road Highway 734, Ram Falls Provincial Park is a rustic destination close to the impressive Ram Falls on Ram River. These falls drop 20 metres onto sandstone. Getting a good look at the falls is easy from the safety from the viewing platform. The area is popular for hiking, fishing and wildlife viewing. Keep your eyes open for Bighorn sheep, which are common in the area.
Ram Falls Campground has 54 unserviced campsites which cost $28 per night. Reservations are available, but 10 sites are always first come, first served. Make sure to bring your own firewood, drinking water, and off-line maps.
Be cautious driving down the forestry trunk road. This winding road can be rough and steep. It may not be suitable for all RVs.
Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area
Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area, which is located 22 km west of Nordegg on Highway 11, is a beautiful spot to explore the Bighorn River. The falls themselves have two tiers and drop 27 meters. There is a 2.5 km trail that leads from the campground to the Bighorn Gorge Lookout which gives visitors a spectacular view of Crescent Falls and the Bighorn Valley.
While Crescent Falls is visually stunning, the power of the falls makes this section of the Bighorn River quite dangerous. Do not swim or even wade either above or below the falls.
The well-treed campground at Crescent Falls features 22 unserviced RV sites available for $28 per night. Cell service is patchy, so be sure to come prepared. Bring your own firewood and drinking water as well.
The drive into the campground includes a creek crossing. Alberta Parks recommends that visitors walk down to the crossing to take a look before deciding whether their vehicle is safe to pass.
Castle Falls Provincial Park
Castle Falls Provincial Park in the Southern Rockies is a perfect spot to enjoy gentle waterfalls and a gorgeous turquoise swimming hole. Located 20 kilometers west of Pincher Creek, this provincial park is a popular destination for Calgarians.
The campground has 45 unserviced sites available for $26 per night. All sites are reservable through the provincial online reservation system. There is no firewood or drinking water available at this campground, so make sure you pack accordingly.
