Police have arrested a man from Okotoks after he allegedly smashed windows of the Aldersyde A&W Wednesday morning.

According to a press release sent out Wednesday afternoon, RCMP responded to a call at the Aldersyde truck stop around 7:35 a.m. on Nov. 4 where a man had allegedly brought a baseball bat and smashed out the windows.

Okotoks-area farrier Lynn Fleury said she and her partner Jory Rivalin were trying to go to breakfast when she saw the man pull up and start striking windows with the bat.

"I just finished getting fuel and I was going over to the A&W drive-thru to get breakfast," said Fleury.

"This guy pulls up in his car, speeds in and slams on the brakes."

"Then he jumped out with a baseball bat and just started beating the windows in.

"Then somebody came out and started talking to him and he threw the bat and started running."

Fleury said a bystander then picked up the baseball bat and the suspect confronted them.

"The guy that was beating the windows in went over and was lipping off to him and looked like he was threatening him," Fleury said.

"This guy got him on the ground and I guess they held him.

"There was a few guys piled on top of him until the police could get there.

"We left shortly after that. All I wanted was breakfast and I couldn't even get into the drive-thru to get it," Fleury added.

Turner Valley RCMP Staff Sgt. Laura Akitt confirmed in a phone interview that civilians were detaining the man as Mounties arrived at the scene, but could that she could not comment further on the incident.

A 28-year-old man from Okotoks was charged with several criminal offences, including impaired driving, possession of a dangerous weapon, and mischief over $5,000.

He has been released to appear in Okotoks Provincial Court on Dec. 4.

The name of the suspect won't be released until the charges are officially sworn.
