Time to book an expansion

The public library is the jewel of the community. Those were the words of former Lt. Governor Lois Hole, and they couldn’t ring more true.

The public library is the jewel of the community. Those were the words of former Lt. Governor Lois Hole, and they couldn’t ring more true. Where else can a person find endless resources, thousands of novels ready to carry readers away on any number of adventures, digital media, movies, video games, quietude, programming, and opportunities to come together as small groups for learning or meetings - all in one place? The Okotoks Public Library has heard the demand from town and MD of Foothills residents and is responding to an increased need for more - more space, more books, more resources, more programs, more availability and accessibility of room rentals. In 2005, the library saw its expansion to the current footprint, which provided for the needs of the community at the time. But now it’s time to start thinking ahead. Okotoks has seen exponential growth over the last two decades and is gearing up for a population of 80,000 in 60 years. Institutions like the public library will always remain important to residents, and it’s vital they keep up with the burgeoning population. It’s not just about books. It’s providing time on computers for those who may not have Internet access to do something as simple as check email and search through job postings. It’s providing opportunities for individuals or families to explore the outdoors with equipment like walking poles or snowshoes. An expansion would allow the Okotoks Public Library to widen its inventory of not just resources but also items that bring people together for adventure beyond the pages of their favourite books. Kudos to the library board for spearheading the initiative and getting the ball rolling, and for wanting to take on fundraising. This is the time to grow.
