Students deserve credit

Katie Richardson deserves a medal, not only for her abilities as a runner but for stopping to help a fellow racer during the 4,000m Intermediate girls race at the South Central high school cross-country championships Oct. 5 in Canmore.

When she came across Amanda Hagel from Beiseker High School, who had fallen during the race, she gave up on a chance to run in the provincial cross-country finals this weekend in Cypress Hills.

The Grade 11 student at Foothills Composite High School is also a life guard at the Okotoks Recreation Centre, so it’s second nature for her to jump into action when she sees someone in need.

She obviously didn’t bat an eye to help out, telling Wheel sports editor Bruce Campbell, “Life is more important to this girl than a little race I can run next year,”

Here’s hoping she goes on to win the race next year, she deserves it.

Congratulations to all the scholarship and award winners from Okotoks’ high schools last week.

The best and brightest from Holy Trinity Academy and Foothills Composite High School/Alberta High School of Fine Arts were recognized for their accomplishments in the classroom, on the sports field and in the community on Oct. 6.

It’s clear we have some great students in Okotoks schools who are destined to big things in their future.

I’d like to give a special congratulations to Michelle Vaniersel and Spencer Greff. Vaniersel won the Western Wheel’s Journalism award and Greff won our visual

communications scholarship.

The High River and District Health Care Foundation’s annual fundraising dinner is back again on Oct. 22 at the Highwood Memorial Centre in High River.

This is always a fun event and it’s a great cause. Money raised at this year’s event will go towards buying a cauterizer and vital signs monitor worth approximately $34,000.

The hospital may be located in High River, but it’s a critically important health care facility for the Okotoks area. The theme for this year’s event is Puttin’ on the Ritz, so get all dressed up in your finest and get ready for a good time.

Speaking of dinners, the Foothills Country Hospice Society’s fundraising dinner is sold out. It’s too bad if you were hoping to go, but it’s great news. Foothills residents have been so supportive of the Hospice in the past and it’s great to see this hasn’t changed. I hope it never will.
