Wrestling a family tradition

Congratulations to Cassidy Barnert who won a gold medal at the provincial wrestling championships in Edmonton last week.

Congratulations to Cassidy Barnert who won a gold medal at the provincial wrestling championships in Edmonton last week.

It capped an incredible wrestling career for the Barnert clan as Cassidy and her brothers won 11 medals at provincials during their high school careers.

Abi Watkins also carried on the Watkins tradition winning silver at provincials.

We have been lucky in this community to watch the Barnert and Watkins families dominate the sport in this province for more than a decade.

Hopefully, there are some new athletes who will step up to carry the torch.

They never like to make it easy on us do they?

After being the hottest team in the province since Jan. 1 the Okotoks Junior A Oilers were in tough against the pesky Olds Grizzlys in their opening round of the Alberta Junior Hockey League playoffs. The series was tied 2-2 with the deciding Game 5 on Tuesday which was too late for our deadline. I have a good feeling the Oilers escaped with a win and moved on.

This Oilers team is an exciting group led by the dynamic Chris Collins. I think if they can get through this first round they will be in it for a long run and perhaps our first trip to the finals.

The Junior B Bisons are also rolling and look to sweep Medicine Hat to advance to the South final.

Let’s get out there are cheer on our local teams and show them we have their backs.

I hear the first movie night at the Rotary Performing Arts Centre was well attended. The second film is the classic “The Commitments” which will be Thursday at 7 p.m. This is a great Irish movie and for just $2 is a great way to get into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit.

Speaking of St. Patrick’s Day, Celtic Collective will be at the performing arts center on Friday. Organizers are hoping to make this a regular event and perhaps transition into a folk club.
