Vaccine in a year is a wonder

opinion editorial stock

This month is the one-year mark since coronavirus levelled the province.

A lot has changed since that time — including the name, it's now referred to as COVID-19, or just plain old COVID.

However, there is nothing plain about the disease, it has killed nearly 2,000  Albertans, cost thousands of jobs, stalled the economy and has had students switching between online and live classroom and has disrupted everyone's lives.

But there are some signs of a light at the end of the tunnel, especially as the vaccine starts to roll out.

While there have been complaints — distribution, how many shots does Canada get" who gets it? Wow, what a mess.

Actually. wow what a miracle of science.

When the pandemic broke and as businesses, schools and the entire world became impacted by the disease, there were concerns there would not be a vaccine for up to two years.

That was far from the case. The first shot administered in Canada was in December.

And now, as we approach the 'anniversary' of the COVID shutdowns, there are likely few Albertans who don't know at least one person that has been vaccinated.

Even the bad boys, of the pandemic, pre-January the United States, are quickly getting its residents vaccinated.

And with Canada now approved four vaccines, more and more Canadians, Albertans and Okotokians will be vaccinated in the future.

Those vaccinations are a shot in the arm for confidence — confidence in the community, economy and the future.

The vaccines don't mean this is over. Grads will be different, life will still be weird, and businesses are far from out of the woods.

But the fact there is at this time is a vaccine, is a chance to look back at medical science in the past year in wonder.
