Summer booked with fun at Okotoks library

Preparations are underway at the Okotoks Public Library to ensure that patrons will have lots of incentive to keep reading this summer.

Preparations are underway at the Okotoks Public Library to ensure that patrons will have lots of incentive to keep reading this summer. The TD Summer Reading Club, Summer Reading Bingo (Ages three to 17), and the Adult Summer Reading Challenge 2015 will give participants a chance to win weekly and grand prizes as well as suggest titles of books and interesting ways and places to read them.

Drop-in sessions for the TD Summer Reading Club for ages 6 to 8 and 9 to 12 will run Monday, Wednesdays and Fridays, July 3 until Aug. 19.

Preschoolers and their families are invited to join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting July 2 as we visit local parks around the Okotoks to share stories, games and fun. Each day we will head to a different location so like us on Facebook (Okotoks Public Library) and follow us on Twitter (@okotokslibrary) to find out where we will be heading to next. In event of rain, classes will be held at the library.

Complete program details are available at okotokslibrary.ca.

Anyone who stops into the library this week to pay off his overdue fines need only pay half as the library holds its semi-annual Patron Amnesty June 14 - 20. This offer does not include lost or damaged material fines. Also taking place this week at the library is another Huge Used Book Sale sponsored by the Friends of the Library. A bag of books can be taken home for only $4. The sale runs June 18 - 22.

The library is also excited to be part of the Okotoks Children’s Festival this year and will host a craft table at Ethel Tucker Park on Saturday, June 20 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Due to the Okotoks Parade, the library will be closed until 12 p.m. this Saturday. Bathrooms in the library’s foyer, however, will be available for use from 10 a.m.

Also taking place at the library this coming weekend is The League of Artists Exhibit which will feature original works from 6 local young artists who participate in the Inspiration Studio’s The Sweet League (ages 7-10) and The Epic League (ages 13+).

Finally, to round out what is already a busy weekend, the library is thrilled to have local authors Carrol Wells and Anne Gafiuk coming to visit us on Saturday from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Carrol Wells, a former Canadian girls rodeo champion and avid dog lover, is visually impaired.

Utilizing computer technology, she dictated her story into her PC, and with assistance published her first book about her life as a cowgirl, rancher, and dog lover. Carrol will have copies of her book Looking Back for sale at $20 each.

Anne’s book Wings Over High River follows the life story of Gordon Jones, World War Two RCAF Pilot Instructor at High River, Alberta. She is now working on a wartime scrapbook project from the Okotoks and helps people write their own stories through her business What’s In A Story? Anne will also have copies of her book available for purchase at $32 each.
