Starting over' s never easy to do

I haven’t had to move anywhere for six years. Packing boxes full of belongings and setting up a household all over again is something I’m quite happy to not have to do often.

Packing boxes full of belongings and setting up a household all over again is something I’m quite happy to not have to do often.

Even if my girlfriend and I ever had to move, at least we would have everything we need. It takes time, but eventually we gather together all the basic household essentials. For most of us, we start collecting stuff early on when we first move away from home, collecting kitchen supplies, furniture, and everything else that makes a house or apartment somewhere you can call home.

My girlfriend and I never thought we’d have to start over, until now.

She starts graduate school in Ottawa in two weeks and I helped her settle into a new apartment over the weekend. We arrived at her new, empty apartment with four suitcases.

I forgot what it was like to start fresh. Food was not at the top of the list. After arriving in Ottawa on Friday evening, that spot was reserved for things like cleaning supplies, a garbage bin and toilet paper. We had to do some quick problem solving as well, such as finding a bed at 5 p.m. on a Friday night.

The next day, it was time for a thorough housecleaning, and shopping sprees for a couple pieces of furniture, more cleaning supplies, kitchen ware, cooking supplies before we could finally think about groceries. Eventually, we got around to finding furniture and putting all her new stuff away.

As much as I wanted to make sure I was there to help out, it’s not me who having to starting over. Once our work was done, I came back home to Okotoks to our fully stocked and furnished apartment in Okotoks. As much as I lent a had this weekend, it’s up to my girlfriend to finish the job, and she’ll do great.

She is well on her way to being somewhere she can call home for the next 15 months. But, I’m going to do what I can from Okotoks to help.

Now, is there anything else I can do with my experience in setting up house in Ottawa. Maybe Macleod MP John Barlow needs a moving consultant for his new apartment in the capital.

Nah, he can do it on his own.
