Rivals play classic for charity

I was grumpy when I started my Christmas holiday.

Those pesky Knights and Falcons played a Senior girls exhibition basketball game on Dec. 20, and with our holiday publication deadline more confusing than calculus, I knew the results wouldn’t be in the paper until literally the next year.

I’m glad I opted to watch the game. It was a thriller, with the Foothills Falcon winning 64-63 on a Brooklynn Baker free-throw with .2 seconds left.

It was an iffy foul call, especially late in the game. One former Chicago resident told me if a call like that was made at that stage of the game in the Windy City, there would be a riot in the gym.

That game deserved to go into overtime. Thirteen days later, who cares?

It was an exciting game and more importantly, it was a charity event for diabetes research.

In what is practically a front page story, I actually opened my wallet and gave $30. My mom had diabetes for more than 60 years before passing in 2009.

She would have been thrilled to see young ladies playing sport. She claimed staying active is what kept her living for so long. With diabetes on the rise due to obesity and poor eating choices, what a great message to raise funds to fight the disease through exercise. So called rivals meeting in, as the game t-shirt said — Two great teams fighting diabetes.

Thank-you ladies. It was a great early Christmas gift.
