Prostate cancer worth our attention

It tickles, it itches, it is red and I am loving every minute of it. I have never grown a moustache in my life, but I must say it is looking pretty darn impressive.

I have never grown a moustache in my life, but I must say it is looking pretty darn impressive.

I must admit I have no idea where the red scruff is coming from, but it sparks a nice contrast with my brown head of hair.

In fact, my trucker stache (think Harry Shearer’s character Derek Smalls in Spinal Tap) has me on pace to not only win the competition at the Okotoks Western Wheel, but perhaps our entire company. Our newspaper group is participating in the Greatwest Great Mo Grow with hopes of not only raising some money for prostate cancer research but also raise some awareness.

To be honest, prostate cancer was never something I was concerned about — that is until I turned 40.

Knowing I am entering the age of being at risk I did a little research and was stunned at what I found. According to the Canadian Cancer Society 25,500 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011 and 4,100 men will die of the disease this year.

These are frightening numbers and certainly caught my attention.

The guys at the Wheel are certainly looking gruff right now, but remember we are looking like a pencil gang for a good cause.

I encourage all of you to make a donation at www.movember.com and check out our progress at the Wheel’s facebook page.
