Penny Tax will be disastrous

Did you see where some Calgary business people are touting the idea of adding a one cent sales tax to all purchases made in Calgary? They estimate it would collect about $350 million a year.

Sounds reasonable, but we all know what will really happen. It will cost millions more than expected to administer and collect the tax. It will be used for the wrong things. I can see it now. A new $700 million dollar for all the multi-millionaire hockey players to play in etc. Why should people on fixed incomes and welfare be forced to help build such things? It is wrong and will just add to the tax burden forever. We all know it will start as a penny and then two, three, etc. Canada started collecting income tax almost 100 years ago as a temporary measure. Poor vision and planning have us in a deficit situation we will never get out of and more taxes will never be the answer.

Anyone my age knows we grew up playing hockey, soccer, baseball, football and swimming outdoors. We actually lived through it.

We need to rethink our priorities and work towards them in a reasonable manner. More tax is not the answer.

The Foothills Country Hospice Mardi Gras fundraiser is getting close to full so you better call 403-603-0168 this week so you are not disappointed. It is being touted as the best party ever in Okotoks. The event will be held on Oct. 29 at the Foothills Centennial Centre.

See you there. I’II be the guy with the big bowtie.

Have a great week and don’t forget to vote for the new PC leader this Saturday at the Centennial Arena. I am taking bets our new leader will be Gary Mar. It will take a miracle for me to be wrong. Late fall Provincial election? Who will run for the PC’s in the Highwood riding against Wildrose leader Danielle Smith?
