Peanut butter burger a surprising combo

Two of my favourite foods are hamburgers and peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I would never have thought to put them both together, until now. The Elvis burger at Marv’s Classic Soda Shop in Black Diamond is one of a kind.

I’ve been looking forward to this one, although I’ll admit to being a little apprehensive.

I’m amazed at how well peanut butter goes with a hamburger.

Marv’s unique Elvis burger has crunchy peanut butter, banana slices, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise.

Owner Marv Garriott makes his own patties using his own seasoning recipe and an aged, lean ground beef from locally raised cattle.

As odd as this may sound, it was the best of both worlds. With some bites, I skipped on the beef just for a mouthful of peanut butter, banana sandwich. With the next bite, I could go back to the burger.

What sets the burger apart is the texture. The peanut butter had that thick, stuck to the roof of your mouth texture – punctuated by the ground beef patty. It’s not an overly juicy patty either, which adds to the texture.

Of course, the burger gets its’ name from the King of Rock and Roll himself.

“Elvis, of course, his favourite sandwich was a peanut butter banana sandwich,” said Garriott.

He first got the idea before he even owned a restaurant. He was watching a show on TV featuring a diner in the US that had a peanut butter banana burger on its menu.

Garriott admitted to being uncertain about the idea himself at first.

“It was something I had to think about too,” he said. “I decided I can’t sell something unless I try it myself, so I tried it one day and thought that’s really good.”

He said some of his customers have to work up the nerve to try the burger, but no one has been disappointed yet.

According to Garriott, peanut butter goes well with just about anything you can put on a burger. He has four peanut butter burgers on the menu, and one of his biggest sellers is the Magoo Burger, which includes peanut butter and Cajun spice.

“It all just works together so well, there’s nothing overpowering about it,” he said.

Garriott said the taste of peanut butter can be easily lost in a hamburger, so he recently switched to a chunky peanut butter and spreads a little more on the bun to bring out the flavour.

I’ll put peanut butter on a burger again. In fact, I’m looking forward to finding other ways to combine beef and peanut butter. I tried a quick search on-line and found a lot of recipes for dishes combining beef and peanut butter in stews, steak sauces, even curries.

Now, what about two of my other favourites – ice cream and pizza? I’m a little apprehensive about that one.
