Paul's Place: Holiday season in full swing

I have been to every Light Up since it was started and this one just seemed a little special to me. There were huge crowds, which is not out of the norm, but a fantastic jovial crowd with more young people than ever.

Where do all the young people come from?

All in all a great evening for the town and a great kick off to the Christmas season.

Thanks to Okotoks Rentals for a great fireworks display to finish a wonderful night.

Talking about Christmas, don’t you get tired of the naysayers who want us to be politically correct and not say Merry Christmas or even suggest it may be the time we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ? Some have even taken the singing of Christmas carols out of the classroom.

Don’t get me started, but I for one love Christmas and love what it stands for. As Christians in this country who believe in Christmas let’s not let anyone take that away from us! So rejoice with your families, sing to your hearts content and celebrate this special time of the year.

During the Light Up evening the Western Wheel staff were out and about selling 50/50 tickets with half the proceeds going to our Western Wheel Cares Christmas Charity.

The winning ticket number for more than $500 was #487615. The ticket was drawn by Rob and Haylea Southerland. Thanks everyone who took the time to buy a ticket and a special thanks for those who stopped in to make a donation.

Wheel staff will be back at it on Sunday selling 50/50 at the Junior B Bisons game at Murray Arena at 1:15 p.m. The rival High River Flyers are in town so come on out, cheer on our team and buy a 50/50 ticket!

Did you happen to watch the Grey Cup on Sunday? Wow, I think everyone in Saskatchewan was there. Poor old Hamilton didn’t have a chance. I started out trying to cheer for Henry, but it wasn’t long before I realized they were no match that day for the Riders. Now we can concentrate on hockey for awhile. Go Flames!

It’s crazy how much it cost, but the southeast leg of the Stoney Trail is finally open. I plan on going to Airdrie to a meeting tomorrow morning and can hardly wait to give it a try. Anything will be better than a 7:30 a.m. trip north on the Deerfoot. I am so happy!

Well our FCHS Falcons went to Calgary on Friday night hoping to win a provincial football title but came up against a deserving foe in the Austin O’Brien Crusaders.

The final was 28-7 for the Crusaders who won their third Provincial title in a row.

All in all our Falcons had a great year and watch out for them next year. Good job boys!

On a little happier note, congratulations to the Oilfields Drillers Senior Boys volleyball team as they won their first ever 2A zones to advance to the Provincials in Edmonton. Best of luck in the capital city.
