Another election tidbit is that you do not have to vote for a full slate. If you only want to vote for one or two candidates running for council then that is fine. Your choices will count. The most important thing is to vote.

On Friday, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. we will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Foothills Centennial Centre. Drop by to check out the entertainment all afternoon. There will be a cake cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. Wow, 10 wonderful years of success. It took several years of fundraising, but a group of dedicated volunteers finally got the building completed with no cost to the taxpayers of Okotoks. I will never forget the night Davis Edels from Keith GM stood up and donated $250,000 to the project. What a wonderful success story for the community.

Rotary’s global effort to eradicate polio has received a $350,000 pledge from the Province. Rotary in Alberta is committed to match that amount and the Bill Gates Foundation will double the $700,000 for a total donation of $2.1 million. To help our local club do their part we are selling poinsettias for Christmas. Two sizes at $15 and $20. You can order at the Wheel office until Nov. 1 for pick up on Nov. 30.

On Saturday it is Minor Hockey Day in High River. Minor hockey teams will be playing throughout the day at the Bob Snodgrass Recreation centre celebrating the re-opening of the facility.

The teams, now called the Foothills Flyers after the amalgamation of Blackie and High River hockey associations, will also be sporting their new uniforms donated by Bauer.

At 3:30 p.m. there will be a number of special presentations followed by an exhibition game of professional alumni and first responders.

Having hockey back is a great sign High River is on the mend. I hope everyone enjoys the day.
