News from the Valley Neighbours Club

Sharon has generously shared several of her low-growing perennials with us, so I have added them to the planters and here and there elsewhere. I so hope they winter over.

Sharon has generously shared several of her low-growing perennials with us, so I have added them to the planters and here and there elsewhere. I so hope they winter over. This continued rain is hard on the plants, I notice that the hen and chicks are starting to rot and the torrential downpour on Thursday evening didn’t add to the picture.

I attended a 100th birthday last week, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I connected with people I had not seen for many years. It was wonderful to see old friends on a happy occasion.

I must tell you a story that is 100 per cent true: Chuck and I went to party some years ago for a friend who had just turned 100 and he looked so hale and hearty. I said to Chuck, “I hope I look that good when I’m a hundred” and his response was “you don’t look that good now.” It’s a good thing I have a twisted sense of humour or that could have been when the fight started.

This is the weekend of the Longstock music festival in Longview. Music goes from noon to 9 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. on Sunday. There will also be a beer garden, concession stand and artists and vendors on the festival site. It is also Priddis and Millarville’s 109th annual fair. Google Millarville Fair 2016 for all the details and some awesome pictures.

Congratulations to John Barlow’s team who completed the 200km bike ride to raise money and awareness for Camp Horizon. They raised $10,500 for this very worthy cause. I bet there were some very sore bottoms among the group.

The Perseid meteor shower was a bit of a non-event from my vantage point. I spent several hours on my deck and saw six meteors, none of which was spectacular. I watched several satellites wend their way across the night sky and, of course, the big dipper is a constant, so it wasn’t a total disappointment.
