News from the Valley Neighbours Club

We had our line dance wind up on May 5. Lunch was at Bea’s and we thank her for being such a gracious hostess. The general meeting welcomed the usual faithful on May 5. This will be the last meeting until September.

We are going to see what can be done with our lawn as it is looking a little seedy. The trees are in bloom and look quite lovely. The juniper that SCAC planted under the sign wintered well, and once the courtyard is finished our green space will look great, so the lawn is the only downside.

The May 12 garden club meeting is a trip to the Saskatoon Farm. We will meet at VNC at 1:15 p.m. and carpool, unless you wish to go on your own. The main topic will be fruit trees and how to grow them in our climate. We can shop for plants and Marika says they have fantastic saskatoon ice cream.

The saskatoons are in bloom and pollination should be awesome as we’ve had no rain to speak of to wash off the pollen, and the swallows are back which will, hopefully, take care of the multitude of flies that we’ve had this spring.

Thanks to the many people who called me about our Gardening Under the Arch. The book has not turned up but folks were so helpful with hints from their copies of the book.

We’ve heard some heartwarming stories about the Fort Mac fire. I read that the Syrian refugee group have contributed $5 per family to buy immediate necessities and one little five-year-old boy gave the toys that were given to him when they arrived in Canada. I, for one, do not believe that the world is going to hell in a handbasket. There are angels among us.
