McAlpine's roast is toast

On Feb. 12, a roast was held in past mayor Bill McAlpine’s honour. The Elks Hall was jammed full and the crowd had a great time. The presenters were rather kind to the old boy, but there definitely was lots of laughs.

Also, Mayor Bill Robertson announced council would vote on placing a plaque at the 32nd street bridge naming it McAlpine Crossing in honour of his 12 years of service to the town as its mayor. The request for this honour had already been approved by the town’s naming committee.

At the council meeting on Valentine’s Day the honour was approved by council. I believe a plaque will be installed in the spring when final landscaping is completed.

I say thanks to both Bills for their efforts in getting this done and now it is time to move forward with our new council.

I have attended a few events they have been at and a couple council meetings and must say I am impressed with the dynamics of the group. Trust me, they do not all think alike but do show respect for each other’s opinions and there will be some great debates as the months and years go by. We wish them well as they are now well settled in for their terms ahead.

When the Calgary Flames were mired at the bottom of the standings with the Oilers I made a bet the Flames would not make the playoffs. They have taken off since that ill advised bet. I guess I should have made it earlier. Wow, to see them beat Colorado 9-1 last night was a treat. Best Valentine’s I have ever had!

Now, closer to home our Okotoks Oilers are also on a great roll and will get a bye through the first round of the playoffs. Watch for their games and lets help them go as far as possible. We are fortunate to have such a great team right here at home.

I love the warmer temperatures we have seen recently but it has sure made the streets and sidewalks icy. Be careful in the car and on foot as it is a skating rink out there.

I see the official re-opening weekend for The Rotary Performing Arts Centre will be held next weekend. Congrats to the Town for obtaining stimulus funds to get that facility brought up to standard. It looks amazing both inside and out. We are fortunate to have this historic facility saved for generations to come. Too bad it was not five times bigger though!

I heard this the other day and it made me laugh. “Calling an illegal alien an undocumented immigrant’ is like calling a drug dealer an unlicensed pharmacist.”

Congrats to Kevin Martin for winning the Boston Pizza Cup and the opportunity to go to the Brier. High River did a great job of hosting the event. How cool would it be if the event was held in our Centennial Arena next time?
