Mayor looks good in sporting Oiler Blue

For the second year in a row, I lost a bet with Okotoks Mayor, and Calgary Flames superfan, Bill Robertson. For two years now the mayor and I have bet on the season series between the Flames and Edmonton Oilers.

So far, I’m 0-for-two, I lost the same bet one year ago.

Last year the Flames won all five outings against the Oilers. This year, it was much closer. It was a back-and-forth season that it came down to the final Oilers/Flames face-off of the year. Both teams were in the NHL’s bottom rungs this year, but it was a great Battle of Alberta.

It was close all season until the Flames tromped the Oilers on April 2.

So, on Monday afternoon I sat through part of a town council meeting wearing the mayor’s Flames jersey. That was the bet. I had to do the same thing last year too.

If the Oilers won, the mayor would’ve had to spend an hour in council wearing my Oilers jersey.

It’s at this point, where I give a nod to the mayor.

He wore my Oilers jersey just long enough for a picture – me in his Flames jersey, and him in my Oilers jersey.

Yes, he won the bet and was under no obligation to wear Oilers Blue. He graciously offered to do so because the Flames/Oilers series was much closer this year. He then took it off and I sat in the back of the council chamber wearing the Flaming C.

It was a gentlemanly move Mr. Mayor.

I don’t have a favourite for the Stanley Cup and I’m not cheering on one team over another. Without any Canadian teams in the playoffs, I’ve spent more time watching teams I wouldn’t normally pay much attention to in the post season.

This year, I’m enjoying simply watching the playoffs just to catch the action for the love of the game.
