Okotoks Mavericks Swimming is hosting the Maverick Madness swim meet this weekend at the Okotoks Recreation Centre. The Riley Minue Pool will be active with competitive swimming starting Friday through Sunday.

At 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon is the Madness Marquee 500. This will be very exciting to watch and if you like competitive sports, I would highly recommend taking it in. It has six male and six female elite athletes who currently swim in Alberta competing for glory in a 5x100m timed trial competition.

Male competitors are Finlay Knox (top ranked Canadian in four events); Justin Lisoway (12 time national medalist); Cole Pratt (National Junior Team); Sebastian Somerset (Canadian Youth Olympic team); Tristan Cote (top ranked Canadian in two events) and Robert Hill (top 5 in Canadian collegiate swimming).

Most of these athletes have broken the two-minute mark in the 200m individual medley, short course. That puts them within nine per cent of the current world record. Female competitors are Megan Deering (the top Canadian in under 18 International Championship), Alycia Weber (Canadian Nationals competitor); Allison McCoy; Ellie Maradyn (fastest Canadian in three events); Emma Mitchel; and Maria Olarescu (ranked 11th in 17 and under in Canada). Total time for the Madness Marquee 500 event is expected to be 30 minutes but promises to deliver some of the most exciting swimming in Alberta, and possibly even in Canada, this year.
