LETTER: Roads not plowed turn into skating rinks

I understand the budget issues for plowing every street, but when freezing occurs the icy roads become a public safety issue.

A letter writer is concerned that ice-covered roads become a public safety issue.

Dear Editor,

I am relatively new to Okotoks, about 18 months, but what surprises me about the whole area, including Calgary, Okotoks and High River, is the fact that many streets don’t get plowed after a snowfall, which is not a major issue at the time but when there is a melt and then a freeze, the roads affected become a skating rink.

I understand the budget issues for plowing every street, but when freezing occurs the icy roads become a public safety issue. I’m told that one of the complaints entering the public health care system is broken limbs from slipping and falling on the ice.

My wife had occasion to slide her car sideways after crossing the railway tracks onto South Railway Street. Ironically, she was to attend an Okotoks newcomers meeting with the mayor speaking but the church where the meeting was to be held had a frozen parking lot which necessitated cancelling the meeting.

Hopefully the local governments involved will address this safety hazard.
