LETTER: Okotoks seniors don’t deserve this kind of harassment

As the sun goes down, the harassed, apprehensive senior residents are beginning to feel less safe and secure in their home, on their property and in their community.

Dear Editor,

In the case of the doorbell-ringing apple lobbers on scooters, here are the facts as we know them:

After intermittent nightly visits of the “white rabbit” doorbell ringing variety throughout the summer of 2023, this activity, centering around a home in Sheep River Vistas, escalated from Sept. 13 to 28, which included nearly a six-night continuous intrusion, resulting in 17 calls to the Okotoks RCMP.

Some nights had multiple episodes, during which “gifts” were left on the entrance area and passed on to the RCMP. The last couple of episodes included the throwing of apples/pears at the windows and sides of this home of a senior widow.

As the sun goes down, the harassed, apprehensive senior residents are beginning to feel less safe and secure in their home, on their property and in their community. Unable to sleep well, twitching at any noise that used to be normal “house settling” or overnight street noises, wondering why is this happening now after we have lived here for 14 years?

We learned there have been escalating groups of teens roaming the streets of Okotoks up to 3 a.m., especially these past several years. Questions uppermost in so many minds: Where are their parents? Do they not comprehend boundaries?

Taxpaying senior voters/volunteers deserve respect and support from Okotoks council and Mayor Thorn.

How is it possible that ongoing harassment of this sort is allowed throughout our town? If not stopped, it can only continue. Where is the benefit from this behaviour?
