LETTER: No excuse for state of Okotoks roads this winter

Telling Okotokians that we have a road maintenance priority system just doesn’t cut it.

Dear Editor,

From Jan. 27 to 30, I witnessed nine car accidents due to the horrendous state of our roads. The roads were covered in sheer ice. There is not enough sand, gravel and salt being applied and the worst appears to be outside regular business hours. This is truly unacceptable and a disgrace.

We had family and friends in town for hockey games and they witnessed nearly as many minor accidents. They even had to drive up onto the curb and boulevard, damaging their wheel, to get traction and avoid rear-ending another vehicle.

I see numerous other people venting on social media about the state of our road maintenance. There’s simply no excuse. And telling Okotokians that we have a road maintenance priority system just doesn’t cut it.

We have had lower than average snowfall and a fairly mild winter. I can only imagine that our snow winter maintenance budget is in a good state. Either way, something needs to be done on weekends and evenings with our maintenance.

We are blessed with modern day forecasts so there is absolutely no excuse for not being proactive or having employees working overtime to manage this expected issue.
