Letter: Discrepancy in online, print poll results confusing

letters_to_the_editor_330x220

I have lived in the County of Foothills all my life and I have appreciated the Western Wheel for as long as I can remember, keep up the good work.

I was concerned though when the results of the "What do you think of latest COVID-19 restrictions placed by Premier Jason Kenney?" on Nov. 25 came out.

Perhaps there was a misprint, as the do not coincide with the online numbers.

Here is what I found:

Newspaper

1. No restrictions should be in place — 19%

2. They are too harsh on certain businesses, sports — 15%

3. Restrictions are appropriate — 4%

4. Did not go far enough — 28%

5. There should be a circuit-breaker — 34%

Online

1. No restrictions should be in place — 45%

2. They are too harsh on certain businesses, sports — 22%

3. Restrictions are appropriate — 1%

4. Did not go far enough — 11%

5. There should be a circuit-breaker — 21%

These numbers give a very different perspective to readers and leaders. Please show your readers the true facts and figures so that we can continue to enjoy your paper.

Editor's note: The printed results in the Nov. 25 issue were set for production at around 6 p.m. on Nov. 23. That evening, according to Great West Newspapers information technology personnel, the poll was picked up by an aggressive bot and several thousands votes were cast, including 478 from London, 269 from Atlanta and other cities not typically participating in the Okotoks Western Wheel poll. That was the reason for the discrepancy. There were 9,214 votes cast total which is significantly more than a typical poll result. The Wheel apologizes for any confusion.
