Letter: Column uncovers mask controversy correctly

Steps need to be taken to protect residents

Dear Editor,

I was glad to read Brent Calver’s commentary and agree with him.

Masks are such a simple thing to wear and making an effort for two metres.

Many people are in stores in Okotoks without masks, nor making an effort to distance outside.

I mentioned to one person in a store that she should be wearing a mask.

She said she had a medical condition, but was buying a package of cigarettes. Perhaps they weren't for her. Storeowners need help to enforce mask wearing and distancing policies and bylaws.

They aren't trained to do that.

My wife and I have also met groups of high school students out for lunch hour walking on sidewalks.

Many don't make an effort to go single file to distance, but continue two and three abreast when approaching other pedestrians.

Even when asked to move over to try for two metres, some keep the same pattern, as if they are joined at the hip.

One said 'I don't care'.

Perhaps parents and grandparents can do something to convince them to care. More young people are contracting COVID now.

As a final note, Brent's mention of the seatbelt being a danger to only the person not wearing one is not entirely correct.

If not belted in when an accident occurs, that person has a great chance of becoming a flying boulder inside the vehicle, smacking into whoever is inside, then being ejected.

An adult is a lot of weight banging into a child or another adult. We've got to start caring more and thinking things through beyond our own narrow viewpoints. Let's lead by a positive example. Starting now.

Please.
