It was a night to remember

I do not know if there is an unwritten law saying what happens at a curling bonspiel stays at a bonspiel, but I cannot overlook what transpired on Saturday night.

I do not know if there is an unwritten law saying what happens at a curling bonspiel stays at a bonspiel, but I cannot overlook what transpired on Saturday night.

I had the privilege of being the emcee for the Okotoks Ladies Bonspiel awards banquet and it was certainly a memorable experience. Now, I have emceed a few events before and I did not think this would be too difficult. I should have done some research.

Getting up in front of a crowd does not bother me, but when I arrived I realized I was one lonely man among 160 women dressed in crazy costumes. I have to admit I was pretty intimidated.

Now fully recovered from an evening I can only describe as “eye-opening” it is my duty to inform the community what these ladies were up to Saturday.

Ladies, brace yourselves, I am about to spill the beans. Husbands, brace yourselves, you will not believe what your better halves were doing on Saturday night.

I do not want to be responsible for any broken marriages, but people should know what goes on at the curling rink after hours.

Some of you who are faint of heart may not want to read any further and, to be honest, I completely understand if you put your paper down.

Here it goes, this group of crazy curlers were . . . well, having a blast raising money for a great cause.

The theme for the evening was Sports and every team was given the assignment to dress up in outfits depicting a specific sport.

Almost every team abided by the rules and indeed dressed up. Of course there were some pedestrian sports like golf and fishing which were pretty casual.

However, other teams were over the top including the hilarious roller derby teams, a rambunctious football team, some overzealous cheerleaders and a pair of scintillating synchronized swimming teams.

However, what was most impressive was how these curlers stepped up to help out a local cause.

The awards banquet was also a fundraiser for KidSport Okotoks and the event raised well over $1,000 for the charity.

Teams were getting caught in the moment and donating auction items including NASCAR jackets and curling tickets on the spot.

Team Warnock and the local curlers deserve a pat on the back for a job well done and it was an honour to be a part of the event.

The best part? No line up for the men’s washroom.
