I will be celebrating my 40th in style

Initially, the idea of “celebrating” my 40th birthday seemed ridiculous, I am in no rush whatsoever to turn 40. In fact, I was more looking forward to eating a haggis burger at the Foothills Highland Games on Saturday than turn 40.

Initially, the idea of “celebrating” my 40th birthday seemed ridiculous, I am in no rush whatsoever to turn 40.

In fact, I was more looking forward to eating a haggis burger at the Foothills Highland Games on Saturday than turn 40.

However, now that a rock star is throwing me a birthday bash my attitude has changed completely.

(I am still not keen on the haggis burger, but I will try it and the Scotch will be close at hand as a chaser.)

It’s true, a rock ‘n’ roll hall of famer will be hosting my birthday party in October and in Cabo San Lucas no less.

Granted, he might not know it, but Sammy Hagar and I will be sharing a birthday cake together on Oct. 13 — and this party has taken 14 years to plan.

You see on my honeymoon we made a stop at Cabo San Lucas as part of our cruise and I desperately wanted to stop a Hagar’s bar Cabo Wabo, but when we were there it was closed.

Knowing her husband is a huge Van Halen fan my wife could see I was disappointed.

I also have a special connection to Sammy as we share the same birthday — Oct. 13. How could two Libras not hit it off if we sat on the patio at Cabo Wabo with a Corona and a tequila?

Doing what she does, my wife lifted my spirits by promising me for my 40th birthday we would return to Cabo San Lucas so I could celebrate the big 4-0 with Sammy.

This was indeed special as Sammy hosts a massive concert at Cabo Wabo on his birthday.

Well for 14 years the plan was on the back burner until this spring when I started looking into tickets for Sammy’s Birthday Bash.

Perhaps it was my prairie boy naivety but it never even occurred to me this would be a tough ticket to get, let alone almost impossible. When the tickets go on sale they sell out in literally two minutes.

We had already bought our flight, our hotel — how would it feel to be down there and not have tickets to the show? I would be crushed, in fact I probably wouldn’t go to Cabo as it would be heartbreaking.

I did everything I could to help my cause. I “liked” Sammy on facebook, I joined his fan club online and I even bought his book hoping that would earn me some karma points.

Finally, last week the tickets went on sale and I was at my computer hitting refresh like a chicken at feeding time.

I don’t remember the last time I was so nervous. My wife was on speaker as we frantically tried to get through.

Please, please, please, refresh, refresh, refresh. . . BUY TICKETS!

I seriously could hardly type in my credit card number my hands were shaking so much I was so worried they would cut me off if I was not fast enough.

Success! I was through and two tickets were mine! I could hardly believe it!

I could not contain my excitement and skipped down the street to The Royal Duke for an early birthday present — a pint of Grasshopper.

Oh so happy birthday to me! Wait until I tell Sammy, he is going to be ecstatic. Hey Sammy, I’m comin’ to our birthday party!

Perhaps I should bring something, like a potato salad, it would be rude to show up empty handed.
