I want to be the next Santa

Santa Claus has the greatest job in the world. Last week we had the pleasure of calling Tracey and Lance Nakamura to let them know they had won the Western Wheel’s Summer Backyard Barbecue Party and they seemed pretty excited.

Santa Claus has the greatest job in the world.

Last week we had the pleasure of calling Tracey and Lance Nakamura to let them know they had won the Western Wheel’s Summer Backyard Barbecue Party and they seemed pretty excited.

However, it was nothing compared to the reaction when they saw everything we delivered to their backyard on Saturday.

As we unloaded the barbecue, fully stocked bar fridge, burgers, smokies, cupcakes, fire pit and even a band they became more and more excited as every gift was unveiled.

It truly was like Christmas morning as, like two children unwrapping their gifts, their joy continued to escalate.

I can still hear Lance now.

Every time one of the Wheel staff turned a corner into their backyard baring another gift his reaction was the same, “Wow.” Followed by a little giggle like a youngster who got everything he asked for on his Christmas list.

I know Lance, Tracey and their wonderful children enjoyed looking over their haul, but I think the rest of us had just as much fun making the delivery.

I truly felt like Santa Claus and I could not help laughing as I watched the children gaze over all food and treats, Tracey run her fingers over the new fire pit and Lance lift the lid on the shiny barbecue or open the door on his new beer fridge.

Of course, what made it special was the fact the Nakamura family was so appreciative of winning

the contest.

A cool, rainy Saturday evening did not dampen the spirits in their backyard. Tracey and Lance celebrated their backyard barbecue with their neighbours under makeshift shelters and huddled around the fire.

They were even gracious enough to invite the Santas to stay and enjoy a burger and a beer — beats the heck out of cookies and milk any day. The Nakamura family is definitely on Santa’s Good list.

Saturday’s experience again confirms why we choose to live in the Foothills. Local businesses stepped up to help bring summer to an Okotoks family who was simply overwhelmed by the generosity of all those involved.

I just want to say thanks to everyone who helped make the barbecue possible: sponsors, staff and of course the Nakamura family.

I hope Santa makes another run next summer.
