Here we grow again

As reported in the Western Wheel last week, the M.D. of Foothills and the Town of Okotoks have reached an agreement on the Town’s proposed annexation of additional land into the Town of Okotoks. This is a huge achievement and allows both municipalities to manage the growth demand of our communities into the future.

For those who have been following the progress, you will know that it took years of negotiation to reach this agreement but the time was needed to get this right.

I’ve been working on this since 2010. Many times it appeared that it wasn’t possible, but it is really satisfying to know that councils from both municipalities persevered and reached a mutually beneficial deal.

A great job by all involved.

Congratulations to the Sherwood Like to Play Community Band and the Salvation Army Brass Band on their successful fundraising concert last week.

The bands worked together to put on a concert on April 15 to raise funds for a young refugee family who are expected to arrive in Okotoks this spring. Wheel reporter Tammy Rollie wrote a story about the concert in the April 13 Western Wheel.

Over 300 people attended the concert, and $7,473 was raised for the family. The success of the concert far exceeded everyone’s expectations. It’s amazing what can be achieved when a group of people comes together to help others.

The Okotoks Citizens on Patrol are back! A dedicated group of volunteers has been fully trained and are assisting the Town of Okotoks and the RCMP in patrolling our streets and reporting suspicious activity to the authorities. The regular patrols by the Okotoks Citizens on Patrol were re-instituted at the request of the RCMP. The Citizens on Patrol are unpaid volunteers who also contribute their own vehicles and fuel to help make Okotoks a safer place. Donations are currently requested to replace old equipment and funds for meeting space. Please forward donations to Citizens on Patrol Okotoks, c/o 1 Ranch Road, Okotoks AB, T1S 1W8

The Western Wheel took two awards in the Canadian Community Newspaper Association’s annual awards last week. The Wheel placed third in the community service category for our Western Wheel Cares Christmas charity campaign and third place for best sports coverage.

Thank you again to all the donors who supported Western Wheel Cares during the 2015 holiday season and to the Wheel’s staff for all their hard work making the campaign a success.

Congratulations as well to our sports reporters Remy Greer and Bruce Campbell, we always knew they were among the best in the country!
