Foothills football scribes spoiled

Fall can only mean one thing in the Foothills – a high school team is making a run for a provincial title. But this year the fall colours have a different hue – the grey-and-black of Holy Trinity Academy Knights rather than the burgundy of the Foothills Falcons. Boy, have high school football writers in this neck of the woods been spoiled. Since I arrived in the scene in 2007 I think there has been only two years that either HTA or Foothills haven’t gone deep into the playoffs. Either the Falcons or the Knights have been in at least the provincial semifinals in six of the past seven seasons – with the Falcons winning the past three provincials titles – a treat for scribes like Remy Greer and myself. Hopefully all good things won’t come to an end and the Knights can keep their surprising season going. Hats off to coach Matt Hassett whose biggest fault in his coaching style is his geography – he happens to work and live in Okotoks home of the above-mentioned Falcons. I may have known Hassett and Knights basketball coach Sam Aiello the longest of the present coaches in the area. I’ve been misquoting them since my days in High River starting in 1997. Now, I’ve tried making it to as many football provincial finals as I can over the years, Edmonton twice and Lacombe once for the Falcons and Lethbridge when the Knights did it back in 2011. Hassett’s got some serious work to do before I can start making plans for another trek, starting with getting by the talented Catholic Central Cougars on Saturday in the Bridge in the provincial quarter-final. Here’s hoping the Knights can do it, and high school football reporters like myself can continue to be as spoiled as a New England sports beat writer.
