Field house of dreams

Well you could have knocked me over with a feather. Last week I couldn’t wait any longer so I headed out to see the new field house at the Aldersyde lights on Highway 7. The facility was built on a shared basis by the MD and the Town of Okotoks.

Well you could have knocked me over with a feather. Last week I couldn’t wait any longer so I headed out to see the new field house at the Aldersyde lights on Highway 7. The facility was built on a shared basis by the MD and the Town of Okotoks. High River was asked to be a part of it but decided to build their own facility.

Well, you will have to go a long way to find a more fantastic facility. It houses four full size fields that can be used for more sports than I can remember but it includes soccer, lacrosse, basketball, tennis, badminton, pickleball and just about anything else you can imagine. There is also a walking track on the second level, which by the way is free for seniors to head on over and make use of. There are more meeting rooms than you can imagine, tons of locker rooms etc.

The vibrant colours which are coordinated for each area gets the heart rate up before you even serve the ball! Let me tell you this facility will be the talk of the region for years to come. Congratulations to all those with the vision to get this done.

PS. Don’t miss the Grand Opening when it is announced.

First Calgary is hosting a Charity BBQ on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Proceeds will be going towards the Okotoks Chapter of Big Brothers and Big Sisters. Five bucks gets you a burger and a drink. The weather will be great so maybe try and bring the staff down for lunch! Mascots Rigger, Diggity and Ralph the Dog will be there as well. I’m already hungry.

As I have told you before, Oct. 4 will be one busy day. Please start your day with a family walk in support of the Children’s Wish Foundation. More info at okotokswishmaker.ca. Then I hear long time resident, friend and fellow employee many years ago is going to turn 90. I often see Madeleine Fleck walking downtown and back up the hill. Not sure I could keep up! Check out the announcements in this issue for the afternoon celebration.

The Western Wheel also has a team competing in the second annual Grate Groan Up Spelling Bee at the Wales Theatre in High River. Please pledge support to our team by donating at www.litforlife.com/events.htm and selecting toe link for the Western Wheel.

After all the day’s festivities you have two great dinners to choose from, a Turkey Dinner at the Davisburg Hall in support of their Community (tickets 403-938-1022) or the Okotoks Rotary Lobster Fest in support of Local Youth Programs (tickets 403-995-4151).
