Congratulations to RJ Sigurdson on your election to be the next MLA for the Highwood constituency! Your message of getting Albertans back to work, building pipelines and scrapping the carbon tax truly resonated with people here. You have a strong mandate to boost the economy and I wish you all the best for a successful and fulfilling term at the Legislature.
I always knew my great-grandfather and his business partner started the Albertan newspaper and Alberta Job Press in Calgary when he immigrated to Canada from Ireland. What I didn’t know until a couple years ago was that his father, my great-great-grandfather, ran a printing press in Ireland. My uncle John discovered this when he traveled to Ireland a few years ago and met some of our long lost relatives in Cork.
My father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather all made their careers in the printing and publishing industry. I’ve got ink and newsprint in my DNA. For as long as I can remember, there was never a doubt in my mind that one day my occupation would be printing and publishing too.
The last four years publishing the Western Wheel newspaper and Okotokian magazine have been profoundly rewarding for me personally. Having the chance to try my hand at my family craft was an adventure I had to explore.
While it’s only been four short years, it’s time for me to return to my career in city planning. I’m really going to miss working with my colleagues. I have no doubt that this wonderful team of professionals will keep the Wheel turning into the future.
