COLUMN: Finally face to face

With the lifting of restrictions nearly a month ago, most of us are getting back into the swing of things. For some that might be going into a grocery store without a mask and smiling big at everyone they pass.

With the lifting of restrictions nearly a month ago, most of us are getting back into the swing of things.

For some that might be going into a grocery store without a mask and smiling big at everyone they pass. For others it could be having a meal in a restaurant and savouring every bite or going to see a film at the cinema.

For me, getting back into the swing of things means jumping on a swing I never really took a ride on in the first place.

Some of you may remember that I came to the Wheel back in October, at the tail end of the 2021 election.

Almost immediately I was thrown into the local political scene, digging into the thoughts and feelings of the individuals you elected to be your Town council.

At that time though, COVID was still very much a situation as were corresponding public health rules. That meant that all my interactions with these new people were unfortunately, not face to face.

I knew them all by phone numbers, emails and the pixelated faces on my screen during council streams.

This month, I've had the pleasure of attending council meetings in person, and finally getting to show my face to people I've been distantly interacting with for the past six months.

It's nice to see faces, smiles and be present for valuable discussion that impacts my audience directly.

And on that note — to myself, my audience and Coun. Rachel Swendseid — I apologize for misspelling your name since your election.

It's amazing what handing out business cards to each other can do.

Regardless of what you've been up to the past few weeks, I hope you are enjoying yourself, making the most of the longer days and sunshine and soaking up the best of what Okotoks has to offer.
