Celebrating Legion Week

This is Legion Week in Canada! The Okotoks Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is an exceptional group of people who make me proud. The recent history of this Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is quite remarkable.

This is Legion Week in Canada! The Okotoks Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is an exceptional group of people who make me proud. The recent history of this Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is quite remarkable.

In 1993, the Okotoks Legion had to return its Charter because of reduced membership. Unfortunately, this is a trend seen across Canada where many Legions are struggling to keep the doors open.

In 2014 a gentleman by the name of Malcolm Hughes, a 40-year Legion member, was receiving feedback from people in the community who wanted to bring the Legion back to Okotoks.

This started a movement and on Oct. 29, 2014 Okotoks Branch #291 Royal Canadian Legion received its new charter.

From 1993 to 2014 when there wasn’t a Legion Branch in Okotoks, the Turner Valley Legion served the expanded area. That in itself is a wonderful story of neighbours helping neighbours and ensuring that Legion Members had a place for fellowship.

Currently, there are 175 active members in the Okotoks Legion and they have been very active – raising awareness of post traumatic stress disorder, marking D Day with a parade to the Okotoks Cenotaph, meeting with our local Member of Parliament regarding the Veterans Charter, gaining support and approval for renaming of Centre Avenue to Veterans Way, and so much more.

Thank you to our Veterans for everything they have done and continue to do to make Canada the best country in the world. Lets all wear a poppy in the days and weeks leading up to Remembrance Day to show support for our Veterans.

Mark your calendars! The Davisburg Community is hosting the 6th Annual Turkey Supper at the Davisburg Hall on Saturday, Oct. 3. Buy your tickets in advance, as this is a very popular event.

Tickets are available at the Heritage Heights School or online at www.davisburg.ca. The only thing better than a turkey dinner is a turkey dinner you didn’t have to cook.
